On Sunday 11th Jan, just hours after the Thames Valley Regional Trials, Reading RFC U18 players Hannah Field and Reading Captain Amy Millar both received awards at the Reading Sports Personality of the Year 2008 Awards. This was in recognition of their achievements in Rugby at club, County, Regional, as members of the Talent Development Group and now the England U20 training squad. In addition, the U18 team won the Junior Female Sports Team of the year in recognition of continued match successes and consistent track record in the development of new players to perform at all levels. The Reading sports awards are designed to celebrate and recognise community sporting excellence in the Reading area and the awards were for individuals, teams, coaches and those behind the scenes making sport happen locally. There were attendees there from schools and clubs and multiple sports, not just rugby but swimming, basketball, football, rowing, cricket, athletics, golf and more were competing. The awards were given out by some well known personalities including Sir John Madejski, and Reading FC Manager Steve Coppell. Recipients ranged from a wonderfully talented 7year old golfer to Beijing Olympic medallists. Another award could easily have been earned by the girls for firstly blagging seconds of the main course and then demolishing the plates in less than 4 minutes. Well, they had been Regional trials all afternoon. Many congratulations to Amy and Hannah and thanks to Grace for accepting the team trophy on behalf of the U18 team. The team award will accompany us to the league match on Sunday for team photos before being added to the growing number of awards in the club cabinet!
